Turkish Airlines (THY) is to purchase Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines for $350m to power five new Airbus A330 aircraft that it has ordered for its fleet.

Purpose-built for the A330, the Trent engine provides thrust of up to 72,000lb and features wide-chord fan blade for better protection from foreign object damage.

The order will cover three A330 passenger aircraft and two A330 freighter aircraft and includes service support by the engine manufacturer.

The Turkish flag carrier will receive an advanced version of the Trent 700 which offers a further 1.3% enhanced engine performance.

The new contract follows a July 2009 order for Trent 700s to power seven THY aircraft valued at $470m.

The A330s are expected to be delivered in 2010.
