China Southern has selected Pratt & Whitney’s PW4170 Advantage 70 engine to power ten of its A330 aircraft.

The $590m engine order, placed a this year’s Paris Air Show, will provide China Southern with significant cost and operational benefits and will lessen the airlines CO2 output, according to China Southern Airlines chairman Si Xianmin.

The deal includes a ten-year fleet management plan for engine maintenance.

The PW4170 Advantage 70 is an upgrade of the PW4000 100in fan engine that has a thrust capability from 64,500lb to 70,000lb at take-off.

The Advantage 70 offered with the aircraft, both as a new engine and as an upgrade kit for existing engines, will deliver improved performance including a 2% thrust increase, 1% less fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs.

With this contract Pratt & Whitney engines will be introduced into China.
