Honeywell Aerospace has launched a new online weather service app to provide pilots with information on in-flight conditions.

The version 1 app is designed to provide real-time weather data along the planned flight route through a mobile and tablet.

According to Honeywell, the new service will assist pilots in taking critical in-flight routing decisions.

While saving time for pilots, the weather information service will also help airlines reduce fuel costs, and increase safety and comfort for passengers.

Honeywell Aerospace marketing and product management vice-president Michael Edmonds said: "At Honeywell, we want to give pilots the early warning services they need to plan more efficient and safer flight paths around bad weather.

"With the new service, pilots can take advantage of an intuitive display of current weather information to best manage their flight path and get passengers to their destination safely and on time."

The app builds on Honeywell’s graphical weather product, and complements its IntuVue 3D Weather Radar. Its features include weather radar, cumulonimbus cloud, clear air turbulence prediction, satellite-derived cloud heights and 3D winds aloft.

The weather radar feature will display potentially hazardous weather in a graphical format; cumulonimbus cloud display will give a vertical view of potential storm clouds; and clear air turbulence prediction feature displays potential areas of greater turbulence.

With the satellite-derived cloud heights feature, pilots will have a closer look at the changing weather. 3D winds aloft will show wind direction and speed in an aircraft’s flight path.

Honeywell said that the app will be regularly updated and the next release is planned for roll out later this year.
