Italy-based D’Appolonia has developed the new FLY-BAG2 solution, which aims to protect aircraft, crew and passengers from electronic devices exploding onboard.

The new D’Appolonia FLY-BAG2 can be attached to the aircraft hold and luggage is loaded into the lightweight flexible bag.

In the event of an explosion, the fire-resistant, new generation fabric contains the blast by absorbing the shockwaves, as well as hold any wreckage.

The patented FLY-BAG2 solution is compliant with airworthiness regulations set by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

"We will be responding to industry demand with new sizes for other aircraft types in the near future.”

D’Appolonia CEO Roberto Carpaneto said: “The FLY-BAG2 represents a major step in counterterrorism and gives passengers the assurance that they can travel with increased levels of safety.

“We move into production initially with FLY-BAG2 variants, designed specifically for the Airbus A320, but we will be responding to industry demand with new sizes for other aircraft types in the near future.”

In recent times, airlines are exploring various ways to protect their flights from the threat of explosion from terrorist devices disguised as laptops and computers.

In 2015, the chartered Metrojet flight 7K9268 operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia exploded due to a bomb planted by a terrorist within the aircraft cabin.

A security breach at the Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, Egypt, from where the flight took off, had led to the deadly explosion that killed all 217 passengers and seven crew members on-board.
