AmericanAirlines 777-300ER

American Airlines has taken delivery of its first twin-aisle twin-engine B777-300ER airplane, making it the first airline in the US to add the variant to its fleet.

The Texas-based carrier plans to deploy the new jetliner on its Dallas/Fort Worth to Sao Paulo route in early 2013.

The airline placed an order for two 777-300ERs in January 2011 as part of its fleet modernisation programme.

American Airlines chief financial officer Bella Goren said that this aircraft will offer its customers a new level of comfort and convenience, along with delivering increased efficiency and better operating economics.

"This marks an important milestone in our fleet renewal program and is another tangible example of our progress in building the new American for our customers and our people," Goren said.

Featuring lie-flat seats in business and first classes, the aircraft can accommodate up to 386 passengers in a three-class configuration.

It is also equipped with Panasonic’s eXConnect Wi-Fi system to keep passengers connected while travelling.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Global Sales senior vice president John Wojick said that the 777-300ER is an ideal airplane for American Airlines’ fleet renewal effort providing operating economics, long-range capability, reliability and passenger comfort.

"This delivery demonstrates American’s commitment to transforming its fleet into one of the youngest and most fuel efficient in the industry," Wojick said.

The 777-300ER has a maximum range of 7,930 nautical miles and is 19% lighter compared to the rival aircraft in the same segment.

An extended version of twin-engine 777-300, the variant also produces 22% less CO2 and offers 20% less operating costs per seat, according to Boeing.
