India-based helicopter company Global Vectra Helicorp (GVHL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Era Group to develop helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in the country.

HEMS is a modern trauma care delivery system, which is designed to quickly deliver medical help to patients with time-sensitive medical conditions.

The service also provides transport facilities to patients who do not have access to other modes of transportation, along with attendant specialised in medical expertise and equipment that could be required prior to or during transport.

"We believe that the recent regulatory initiatives will facilitate the development of the emerging HEMS market in India."

Under the deal, GVHL and Era expect to develop a marketing and operational plan to reach and offer medical assistance to casualties following accidents and disasters, evacuate critical care patients, as well as take part in other lifesaving missions within India.

The joint effort will benefit from GVHL’s operating experience at various locations across India and Era’s specific experience in HEMS operations.

GVHL CEO AJ Baker said: "With Era’s experience in establishing and running a HEMS service that meets or exceeds the highest international standards for safety and reliability, and GVHL’s extensive knowledge of factors affecting helicopter operations in India, we are excited to conduct a detailed review of the best way to introduce and deliver a truly world-class HEMS service into India."

The company currently has a fleet of 27 aircraft, which range from small, light helicopters to medium-sized twin helicopters, and provide seating capacity for five to 15 passengers.

Era Group commercial senior vice-president Paul White said: "We believe that the recent regulatory initiatives will facilitate the development of the emerging HEMS market in India."

Last month, the company signed a MoU with Finmeccanica Helicopter Division to involve in joint activities in support of AW609 programme development for the EMS market.

The deal also includes concepts around operations, regulations, maintenance and configuration optimisation, as well as recognising possible areas of improvement or modifications.
