Embraer North America has selected Canon’s MREAL System for Mixed Reality to manage next-generation aircraft production activities.

With the Canon solution, Embraer engineers will be able to explore aircraft designs in real-size scales and also 3D.

The team can also examine, alter, manipulate, analyse and present aviation designs so that complex ideas can be quickly transformed into reality, Canon said.

The MREAL System for Mixed Reality is said to bring together real-life visual information with the flexibility offered by computer-generated images.

Embraer engineering and technology vice-president Humberto Pereira said: "Embraer has been using virtual reality in Brazil to create digital prototypes and evaluate designs since 2000.

"But our engineers in the US will enjoy the next phase of this philosophy, using the Canon MREAL System for Mixed Reality to provide a more interactive, immersive and flexible experience."

"The Canon MREAL system can…help the aerospace industry to implement efficient workflows for the design and development of tomorrow."

Canon MREAL technology will be installed at Embraer’s new engineering and technology centre in Melbourne, Florida, US.

Built with a $24m investment from Space Florida, the facility will allow Embraer to transform its work, manufacture, engineer and future aircraft designs.

Canon USA business imaging solutions senior vice-president and general manager Junichi Yoshitake said: "We are incredibly honoured and excited to join Embraer in establishing the future of mixed reality technology, demonstrating the ways in which engineering and design can be achieved.

"This new relationship is validation of how the Canon MREAL system can unlock new possibilities and help the aerospace industry to implement efficient workflows for the design and development of tomorrow."
