Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has placed an order with Boeing for four single-aisle 737 MAX 8 jets.

The order will add to Air Niugini’s existing fleet of next-generation 737s and 767-300ERs (extended range) aircraft.

Air Niugini chairman Frederick Reiher said: "Papua New Guinea is like no other place on Earth and the 737 MAX will allow us to economically and efficiently connect our beautiful country with the rest of the world.

"The superb economics of the 737 MAX will enable us to increase flight frequencies and develop into new markets, which offer significant opportunities for Air Niugini.

"As our region continues to grow, the 737 MAX is the perfect choice for Air Niugini positioning us for success and ensuring we continue to provide our customers with the best experience possible.

"We look forward to receiving our first airplanes in 2020."

Air Niugini currently operates more than 25 destinations and several international routes across Asia Pacific, including Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Fiji, Philippines, the Solomon Islands, Hong Kong, Vanuatu, Japan, and in the future, China.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Asia Pacific and India sales senior vice-president Dinesh Keskar said: "The 737 MAX will provide Air Niugini with the fuel efficiency, operating economics and passenger amenities they need to ensure their success for the future."

Equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines, the Boeing 737 MAX provides 20% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the first next-generation 737 aircraft.

Boeing and China-based Okay Airways recently entered into a commitment for 12 737s, including eight MAX 8s, three 737 MAX 9s and one next-generation 737-900ER (extended range) jet, worth $1.3bn.
