Turkish Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM engines to power its 92 A321neo aircraft, which was ordered from Airbus.

The firm order with Airbus, considered to be the largest in the history of Turkish Airlines, was announced during this year’s Paris Air Show.

It includes 72 firm and 20 option aircraft, which was later converted into a firm order by the carrier.

Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to start in 2018.

Turkish Airlines deputy chairman Temel Kotil said: "This historic deal for our company is a statement on our commitment to develop the most technologically advanced fleet of aircraft in the industry."

A unit of United Technologies, Pratt & Whitney has currently received 7,000 orders, with options from more than 70 customers from over 30 countries for the company’s PurePower geared turbofan engine family.

"We look forward to delivering game-changing results in fuel consumption, emissions reduction and noise reduction without compromise."

The company is involved in designing, manufacturing and servicing aircraft engines and other related power units.

Pratt & Whitney commercial engines president Greg Gernhardt said: "We look forward to delivering game-changing results in fuel consumption, emissions reduction and noise reduction without compromise.

"We deeply appreciate Turkish Airlines’ commitment to the geared turbofan engine."

Airbus provided new generation engine choices, including Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM and CFM International’s LEAP-1A and other improvements, to its customers who opt for an upgrade of the A320 family aircraft.

Airbus expects to invest €300m per year in the A320 upgrade programme, A320neo ‘new engine option’.

Airbus stated that German carrier Lufthansa replaced Qatar Airways to be the launch customer for the company’s new A320neo jet.
