Mexican low-cost airline Volaris has selected Pratt & Whitney’s (P&W) PurePower PW1100G-JM engine and IAE International Aero Engines’ V2500 engine to power its 30 A320neo aircraft and 14 A320ceo aircraft respectively.

With this development, Volaris has become the first Mexican airline to select P&W’s geared turbofan engine.

This order includes engines, spares and after market services.

The PurePower engine deal includes a 12-year PureSolutionSM maintenance service agreement for 66 engines, including spare and option engines, while the V2500 deal includes a 12-year V-ServicesSM maintenance service agreement for 29 engines, including spares.

Volaris chief executive officer Enrique Beltranena said that the selection of PurePower and V2500 engines would offer a fleet that will generate operational and environmental benefits.

"We look forward to continuing our partnership with confidence in Pratt & Whitney and IAE to power our aircraft in the coming years," Beltranena said.

IAE Board chairman and P&W president David Hess said: "We’re proud that Volaris selected Pratt & Whitney and IAE engines to support their goal of offering customers desirable fares as a result of fuel efficiency and lower operating costs associated with our advanced engine technology."

Volaris operates a modern fleet in Mexico, comprising 43 Airbus A320 family aircraft, and serves 87 routes connecting 30 cities in Mexico and 11 in the US.

Pratt & Whitney has logged more than 4,500 PurePower engine orders and commitments, including options, from more than 40 customers worldwide, which helped the company to maintain its lead position with more than 50% of Airbus A320neo engine orders.

IAE is a multinational aero engine consortium whose shareholders include Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International, Japanese Aero Engines and MTU Aero Engines.

The consortium has to date delivered more than 5,700 engines and logged 1,600 more engine orders from approximately 200 customers across the world.
