DitgitalGlobe has announced that the Worldview-2 satellite has gained full operational capability.

The satellite is designed to collect and record commercial, high-resolution earth imagery.

It is fitted with eight multispectral bands to provide more spectral information and allow for greater analysis capabilities, including improved feature identification and change detection.

WorldView-2 adds to DigitalGlobe’s existing sub-meter satellites, QuickBird and WorldView-1, and expands the constellation’s annual imaging capacity to three times the area of earth’s land mass and allows for intraday revisit.

The satellite is the second of DigitalGlobe’s next-generation imaging satellites based on Ball commercial’s platform 5000 spacecraft.

The earth-imaging satellite had been launched by Boeing atop a Delta II rocket in October 2009.
