Airbus will utilise Intelligent Energy’s multi-functional fuel cell system for auxiliary power aboard future jet models to reduce carbon emissions and decrease fuel consumption.

The fuel cell systems will also aid Airbus in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions on air and on the ground while taxing and take-off, Electric reports.

Airbus has been looking into fuel cell technology for some time, researching how hydrogen-powered cells may provide a better source for power aboard its jets.

The company has also built a test A320 aircraft to further investigate the effectiveness of hydrogen and oxygen-based cells.

Airbus is engaged in tests with algae as a jet fuel along with other airlines including JetBlue Airways and Aero Engines.

Intelligent Energy is a clean power systems company that provides fuel cell and hydrogen generation technology platforms.
