Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has inducted the first Airbus A350 aircraft into its fleet as part of the carrier’s modernisation programme.

SAS is currently focused on an extensive renewal of its short and long-haul fleet. Under this programme, it is set to acquire 80 new Airbus A320neos, five A330 Enhanced, eight A350 and three A321LR aircraft before the end of 2023.

Powered by RR Trent XWB engine, the new fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft will enter commercial service on 28 January next year.

Each of the eight A350 aircraft will carry a total of 300 passengers. SAS Business class will have 40 seats, SAS Plus will have 32 seats and the remaining 228 seats are dedicated for SAS Go class.

In addition to the advanced aerodynamic design and technology, the aircraft features customised SAS solutions.

SAS president and CEO Rickard Gustafson said: “The A350 is a milestone in the extensive renewal of the SAS fleet, which will consist of the market’s most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft.

“With this aircraft, we reduce the fuel consumption compared with the aircraft it replaces, which means reduced carbon emissions by up to 30%. Also, the external noise footprint will be reduced by 40%. Along with the new livery, the A350 is a symbol of a more sustainable and competitive future for SAS.”

The A350 aircraft will be stationed at the SAS hub at Copenhagen Airport and fly on seven routes, including Chicago, Beijing, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and San Francisco.
