Qatar Airways has agreed to disclose its detailed financial statements in response to an allegation made by various US carriers, which accuses the airline of illegally receiving subsidies from the Qatar Government.

The commitment is a result of an agreement signed between the US and Qatar Governments.

It is also expected to boost the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies initiative, which is a coalition comprising American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, as well as Air Line Pilots Association, Allied Pilots Association and others.

“We remain committed to working with the administration to address the harmful trade violations by the UAE as well.”

The partnership seeks to restore a level playing field under the Open Skies agreements between the US, the UAE and Qatar and has been urging the US to enforce the agreements with the two Gulf countries.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said: “Today’s agreement by the State of Qatar is a strong first step in a process for commercial transparency and accountability, and we remain committed to working with the administration to address the harmful trade violations by the UAE as well.

“We are grateful to the Trump Administration for working to restore a level playing field for the US aviation industry and to the tens of thousands of Delta people who have made their voices heard in an effort to protect millions of American jobs and put an end to unfair competition.”

According to the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies, the state-owned carriers of UAE and Qatar have altogether received more than $50bn in illegal subsidies from their respective governments.

The Qatar Government has provided more than $25bn to Qatar Airways in violation of the Open Skies agreement between Qatar and the US, alleged the partnership.

As part of the recent agreement, Qatar Airways has further agreed to not launch any ‘fifth freedom’ passenger flights to the US. The fifth freedom flights are coming from outside Doha, Qatar carrying passengers to the US.
