Vietnam-based budget carrier Vietjet has signed a $3.4bn deal with engine maker Pratt & Whitney for PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines to power its order of 63 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney, an affiliate of United Technologies, will begin deliveries next year.

The GTF engine family has received 7,000 orders, including options from more than 70 customers worldwide.

Vietjet president Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said: "We are very pleased to choose the PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine for our Airbus A320neo and A321neo family fleets.

"With its advanced design of less fuel costs and CO2 emissions, the new engines are expected to boost the carrier’s efficiency and protect the environment, as well as enable Vietjet to offer passengers more affordable air fares."

In November, VietJet signed a contract worth over $700m at list price with CFM International to power its 15 additional Airbus A321ceo family aircraft.

The airline signed another deal valued at $60m with Switzerland’s SR Technics group for component and maintenance services for its A320 and A321 fleet.

In addition, Vietjet entered an agreement with Airbus for flight and maintenance training services.

Under this deal, Vietjet’s flight training centre in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh city will host an Airbus A320 Full-Flight Simulator (FFS) to conduct flight crew training for its A320 family fleet.
