Myanmar National Airlines has taken delivery of its first ATR 72-600 aircraft, as part of plans to upgrade its regional fleet to technologically advanced aircraft.

The airline currently operates three ATR 72-500s, two ATR 72-200s and one ATR 42-300.

In July 2014, Myanmar National Airlines signed a $296m deal with ATR for six new-generation ATR 72-600s, with options for six further aircraft.

The new ATR 72-600s will provide the carrier with greater seat capacity, and allow it to offer enhanced service for tourism and business travel across the country.

Myanmar National Airlines managing director Than Tun said: We are upgrading our fleet with an aircraft that is proving to be outstandingly successful, particularly in Asia, and which has shown itself to be the optimal choice both in terms of operational versatility and fuel efficiency.

"The ATR aircraft are the perfect solution to the needs of regional transportation across the country and within South East Asia."

"Upgrading to the newest ‘-600s’ came naturally after having successfully operated former ATR versions for years."

The airline expects to receive its last ATR 72-600 in 2017.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney 127 M engines, the ATR 72-600 has 900nm of maximum range with full passenger load, and 23,000kg maximum weight at take-off. It can accommodate up to 74 passengers.

ATR CEO Patrick de Castelbajac said: "The ATR aircraft are the perfect solution to the needs of regional transportation across the country and within South East Asia.

"The number of ATRs flying in Myanmar has doubled in recent years, highlighting the aircraft’s suitability for the short-haul network and for main and small airfields."

Myanmar National Airlines and ATR have collaborated to set up a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centre in Yangon, Myanmar.
