Japan Airlines’ wholly owned subsidiary J-Air has selected Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency analytics software to improve flight efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

The software will offer access to detailed flight data analyses to the airline to enable better decision-making for enhanced profitability and on-time performance.

Under the deal, J-Air will implement the GoDirect Flight Efficiency software across 32 aircraft in its Embraer E170 and E190 fleets. The deployment of the software is expected to shorten flight times and streamline operations.

Japan Airlines Fuel Group General Procurement manager Kosuke Kuroda said: “Jet fuel accounts for a significant portion of an airline’s operating expenses, so it’s crucial for us to have an in-depth understanding of fuel consumption across all of our airlines and fleets.

“GoDirect Flight Efficiency is a part of the Honeywell GoDirect software platform, which is scalable for the smallest of regional carriers to the largest of global fleets.”

“With Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency software, we’ll be able to make data-driven decisions that increase profits through more efficient flight routes and better visibility into operational controls that can result in increased fuel efficiency compared with what Japan Airlines is currently experiencing.”

Japan Airlines first used Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight Efficiency in 2017 and has now become the biggest customer for the software in the Asia-Pacific.

The new agreement will allow the airline group to consolidate its data to increase operational efficiencies and reduce environmental impact through decreased fuel consumption.

Airlines can use GoDirect Flight Efficiency to get clear analysis reports and real-time insights for fuel-saving decisions.

The reports help pilots and flight operation crews improve their flight-planning capabilities, expand their understanding of operations and learn from previous flights.

Honeywell Aerospace Asia Pacific Airlines vice-president Brian Davis said: “There’s immense pressure on airlines to find ways to make better use of their assets and increase profitability. A key focus area is fuel, which can account for over a quarter of their operating costs.

“GoDirect Flight Efficiency is a part of the Honeywell GoDirect software platform, which is scalable for the smallest of regional carriers to the largest of global fleets. This is especially beneficial for airline groups like Japan Airlines that can use the service to identify fuel savings specific to smaller, regional airlines and implement larger company initiatives that improve overall operations.”
