Honeywell’s Ka-band satellite broadband technology has been installed on-board an in-service Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft.

The installation was completed at Bombardier’s Singapore-based service centre situated at Seletar Airport.

Ka-band technology is capable of offering improved in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling passengers to browse the internet, stream live TV and movies or stage a video conference from anywhere in the skies.

Honeywell’s Ka-band system is based on the company’s JetWave hardware to provide ultra-high-speed access, consistent performance and coverage around the globe, with the exception of the North and South Poles.

“In 2015, Bombardier revealed plans to provide Ka-band technology as an option on new and in-service aircraft, with deliveries starting in 2016.”

Bombardier Business Aircraft customer experience vice-president and general manager Jean-Christophe Gallagher said: “Our customers need to stay connected no matter where they are in the world, and Bombardier continues to lead the industry in offering the most advanced in-flight media experience available today on both its new and in-service aircraft.

“With Ka-band, passengers can remain connected across oceans, at 41,000ft, and virtually everywhere they fly.

“Moreover, our original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-owned service centres have become masters of the installation to ensure aircraft are returned to service within a minimum downtime.”

In 2015, Bombardier revealed plans to provide Ka-band technology as an option on new and in-service aircraft, with deliveries starting in 2016.

The company completed the first retrofit installation on a Global 5000 aircraft at its Singapore-based service centre in July 2016.

In May, Bombardier secured certification to provide the system on its Challenger family of aircraft.

Honeywell Aerospace Asia Pacific Business and General Aviation senior director Andy Gill said: “In Asia Pacific, business jet owners and operators are demanding better, faster, and more consistent in-flight Wi-Fi that is identical as what they have on the ground.

“With Honeywell’s JetWave hardware and GoDirect Cabin services, business jet owners and operators now have the ability to manage usage and bandwidth to be cost-effective.”
