American Airlines has finalised a $719m order with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft for the purchase of 15 new CRJ900 regional jets.

The order also includes options for 15 additional CRJ900 aircraft.

Newly ordered aircraft will be equipped with Atmosphère cabin, which offers an improved passenger experience and can accommodate more ‘oversized’ baggage compared with its rivals.

Aircraft will offer a dual-class configuration with 76 seats, including 12 first class seats.

“The CRJ900 continues to offer unique revenue growth opportunities while delivering the most modern regional jet cabin features in line with today’s trends and requirements.”

Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to take place by the second quarter of next year. Once delivered, the planes will be operated by American Airlines’ regional subsidiary PSA Airlines.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft president Fred Cromer said: “This order is a testament to the tremendous value that the CRJ Series provides to airlines in the North American regional market.

“With its outstanding economics and new cabin design, the CRJ900 continues to offer unique revenue growth opportunities while delivering the most modern regional jet cabin features in line with today’s trends and requirements.”

In a separate development, American Airlines has placed a $705m firm order to buy 15 E175 jets from Brazilian planemaker Embraer.

Delivery of the new 76-seat aircraft is expected between March and November next year.

The order, along with three previous orders, has brought the airline’s total number of E175 aircraft to 89 units.

American Airlines’ wholly owned subsidiary Envoy will operate the new jets.
