Canada-based low-cost carrier WestJet Airlines has taken delivery of its 100th Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 single-aisle aircraft.

The airplane was initially delivered to California-based leasing company Aviation Capital (ACG), from whom it is being leased and operated by WestJet.

WestJet, which began operations in 1996 with three Boeing 737-200s serving five cities, has expanded over the years and currently serves 81 destinations across Canada, US, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

As a fuel-efficient single-aisle jetliner, Next-Generation 737 offers value to airlines such as WestJet, by reducing operating and maintenance costs and providing reliable service, Boeing claims.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes North America Sales vice president Brad McMullen said the growth of WestJet during the past 16 years has been remarkable, with the 737 playing an integral role.

"WestJet has made the Next-Generation 737 the foundation of its fleet and has established a strong operational track record with the airplane," McMullen added.

The 737-800 variant offers flexibility to operators, as it allows them to cater to a wide range of markets.

The airplane has a seating capacity for 162 passengers in typical two class configuration and up to 189 passengers in a high-density layout, and can fly a further 175 nautical miles when compared to its rival aircraft, even while accommodating 12 additional passengers.
