US cargo carrier United Cargo is to install GS-5L, GS-5B and RSU-3 advanced tracking and monitoring devices in cargo compartments of its fleet of 700 aircraft from technological services provider Cubic Global Tracking Solutions.

The devices have been purchased to improve tracking and security features by offering location, environmental sensing, virtual security-fencing and temperature monitoring to shipments transported through United’s network.

United Cargo president Robbie Anderson said the Cubic suite of products would offer its customers with additional options for cutting-edge shipment monitoring.

"The devices deliver enhanced visibility over several of our key products: UASecure high value, QuickPak and EXP express offerings as well as TempControl."

The advanced wireless, personal electronic devices carry multiple sensors for temperature, humidity, pressure, shock, location and vibration, as well as incorporate patented intelligence and proprietary logic to automatically switch the device’s wireless radios to ‘off’ mode in order to ensure safe and FAA-compliant operation during flight.

Cubic Global Tracking Solutions GS-5L, GS-5B and RSU-3 tracking and monitoring devices comply with Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics environmental standards and test procedures for airborne equipment.

Following a review, engineers at United Cargo recommended use of the devices in the cargo compartment of United aircraft.

In February 2012, United Cargo opened a 23,225m² facility at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, to handle its entire cargo operations following the merger with Continental Airlines.

United owns United Airlines and United Express, which operate some 5,574 flights a day to 377 airports.
