Rockwell Collins PAVES 2

South African Airways has selected Rockwell Collins’ PAVES 2 in-flight entertainment (IFE) with embedded Airshow 3D Moving Map, including connecting gate information, for deployment in its 20 new and two existing Airbus A320 airliners.

Rockwell Collins stated that its PAVES 2 overhead IFE improves the passenger experience with a greater range of information and entertainment content, compared to previous overhead system offerings in addition to considerably reducing size, weight, and power consumption.

The high-definition media server (HDMS) of the system provides integrated pre-recorded announcements and music (PRAM) functionality with embedded Airshow 3D Moving Map, 160GB of solid state digital audio and video storage capabilities, all in a single 4 modular concept unit (MCU), electronics bay-mounted box.

The enhanced Airshow 3D Moving Map system features a new graphical design that uses NASA’s Blue Marble data to provide a modernised view of real-time flight information to passengers.

Rockwell Collins said that the features and performance improvements of Airshow 3D Moving Map system map system deliver 3D graphical realism, while adding new capabilities.

The PAVES 2 will also enable the airlines to handle updates of non-encrypted content themselves or with the assistance of Rockwell Collins content services group, according to the company.

This option provides airlines with the flexibility to respond to commercial opportunities as they arise since time-sensitive content can be replaced at a moment’s notice worldwide.

To date, Rockwell Collins has installed PAVES family of IFE systems on more than 1,600 single-aisle air transport jetliners.

Rockwell Collins is involved in the development and deployment of communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications.
