Linhas Aereas de Mocambique (LAM – Mozambique Airlines), the flag carrier of Mozambique, has placed an order for three Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 aircraft, worth $228m.

The order was previously unidentified on Boeing’s website, also includes purchase rights for three additional Next-Generation 737 jets.

The contract is part of the carrier and the Mozambique Ministry of Transport and Communication’s plan to increase flight frequency, as well as provide improved route flexibility to and from the African nation.

LAM – Mozambique Airlines chief executive officer Marlene Mendes Manave said: "This investment in the Next-Generation 737-700s will help Mozambique to remain at the forefront of the growing demand for air travel in our region and enable expansion into several new markets."

The Mozambique carrier’s new 737-700 aircraft will be equipped with Boeing’s Performance Improvement Package (PIP), providing an additional 2% improvement in fuel efficiency.

In addition, these aircraft will feature the Boeing Sky Interior that includes modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting and larger pivoting overhead stowage bins.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean sales vice-president Van Rex Gallard said: "Today’s order for Next-Generation 737-700s will enable LAM – Linhas Aereas de Mocambique to realise greater efficiencies, improved performance and enhanced passenger comfort, as the airline continues to move forward with its ambitious growth."
