India-based low-cost carrier IndiGo has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus to buy 250 A320neo (new engine option) single-aisle airliners.

The deal could be worth around $25.7bn at list prices, and will be Airbus’s single largest order by number of aircraft.

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh said that the airline has rights to buy additional 100 A320 family aircraft.

"This new order reaffirms IndiGo’s commitment to the long-term development of affordable air transportation in India and overseas," Ghosh said.

"The additional aircraft will enable us to continue to bring our low fares and courteous, hassle free service to more customers and markets and will create more job opportunities and growth."

"The carrier is expected to take delivery of the A320neo aircraft from 2018."

The carrier is expected to take delivery of the A320neo aircraft from 2018.

Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Brégier said: "The A320neo continues to dominate world market share and this commitment confirms the A320 family as the aircraft of choice in the most dynamic aviation growth markets."

If confirmed, the proposed order could close the aircraft order gap between Airbus and Boeing.

IndiGo placed orders for 100 Airbus A320ceo aircraft in 2005, and 180 A320neo in 2011.

The latest news for A320 family jets comes after China Aviation Supplies agreed to buy 70 A320 series aircraft for around $7bn.

Featuring latest generation engines and Sharklet wing-tip devices, the A320neo are claimed to offer 15% in fuel savings.
