Fadec International and GE Aviation have formed a new joint venture to develop, manufacture, and support the full-authority digital electronic control (FADEC) and related technologies for aircraft engines.

Featuring a digital computer called an engine control unit and related accessories, the FADEC monitors fuel flow, variable engine geometries and other aspects of an aircraft engine.

Fadec International is in itself a joint venture between BAE Systems and Sagem. Fadec Alliance, the new joint venture, will be the sole supplier of the system for CFM International’s next generation engine Leap, and GE’s Passport engine.

"The FADEC, utilising fourth generation, proven engine controls, will be a technological discriminator for CFM International’s LEAP engine."

Fadec Alliance president and BAE Systems engine controls director Dennis Slattery said: "The FADEC, utilising fourth generation, proven engine controls, will be a technological discriminator for CFM International’s LEAP engine."

The JV, which will benefit from Fadec International’s experience of supplying the FADEC systems to GE since 1984, will be responsible for the design, manufacture and after market support of the system.

Designed by CFM International, a jointly-owned venture of GE Aviation and Snecma of France-based Safran group, the Leap engine is used to power the next generation narrow body commercial aircraft such as Boeing 737Max, Airbus A320neo and the Comac C919.

GE’s Passport engine is designed for ultra-long-range business jets and has been chosen for the Bombardier Global 7000 and Global 8000 executive jets.
