Boeing Satellite Systems International has been selected by New York Broadband (NYBB) to build a L-band satellite.

The satellite will be designed to offer mobile multimedia services in China and other Asian markets planned by Hong Kong-based CMMB Vision.

Called NYBBSat-1, the new satellite will be built on Boeing’s 702MP satellite platform.

Scheduled for launch in mid-2017, the NYBBSat-1 will replace the AsiaStar satellite at 105° E.

"The high-power payload of the NYBBSat-1 satellite will offer satellite capacity that enables CMMB Vision to deliver services to consumer mobile devices throughout China and the rest of Asia."

CMMB Vision chairman and CEO Charles Wong said: "The selection of Boeing for negotiation of a contract to build our new satellite is another major step for our plan to serve China and the rest of Asia with mobile multimedia programming.

"The high-power payload of the NYBBSat-1 satellite will offer satellite capacity that enables CMMB Vision to deliver services to consumer mobile devices throughout China and the rest of Asia."

NYBB has recently acquired the AsiaStar satellite slot and its L-band spectrum rights.

CMMB Vision has signed a memorandum of understanding with NYBB to lease the entire capacity of the new satellite.

CMMB Vision provides next-generation mobile multimedia service as well as develops mobile and broadcast-unicast convergence technologies such as CMMB and NGBW-LTE Convergence.

Using satellite signals, the CMMB technology is said to offer multimedia services to mobile devices.

NYBB has approached consultant SPI to assess it on launch service for NYBBSat-1 and the planned second satellite, NYBBSat-2.
