Boeing has delivered its first 737 MAX 9 aircraft to the launch customer Lion Air Group, which also placed an order for another 200 aircraft.

The aircraft will be operated by Lion Air Group unit Thai Lion Air to launch various new international routes.

The 737 MAX 9 is the third and newest member to Boeing’s 737 MAX family of aircraft. It is capable of carrying up to up to 220 passengers and features a maximum flying range of 3,550 nautical miles.

Powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, the aircraft is equipped with three more rows than the 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

“The 737 has been the backbone of our business since we began and we will use the added capacity the airplane provides to expand our network.”

Thai Lion Air CEO and chairman Darsito Hendro Seputro said: “The 737 MAX 9 is a perfect fit for our growing business in Thailand.

“The 737 has been the backbone of our business since we began and we will use the added capacity the airplane provides to expand our network and start additional routes to Bangladesh, China and India.”

Lion Air Group previously launched Boeing’s MAX 9 aircraft. The company was the first operator to put the MAX 8 into service and has announced its commitment to buy 50 MAX 10 aircraft.

In a separate development, Ukraine-based startup SkyUp Airlines has finalised an order with Boeing to purchase five 737 MAX aircraft worth $624m at list prices.

The order features two 737 MAX 8 and three 737 МАХ 10 aircraft. It is expected to help SkyUp Airlines meet future demand in the Ukrainian market.

The airline plans to commence charter operations next month by leasing next-generation Boeing 737 airplanes.
