American Airlines (AAL) has selected Services by Airbus to upgrade the cabins of its 202 in-service A321 aircraft.

The installation of Airbus’ new Airspace XL bins is included as part of the order.

The bins are designed to provide 40% extra storage space for carry-on luggage, and reduce bin crowding and the requirement of checking bags at the gate.

The retrofits will be carried out as part of a project that intends to standardise AAL’s A321s fleet with a common seat count and interior.

“This is exactly the type of added-value that our services can bring to airlines.”

AAL’s future A321 aircraft will feature the Airspace XL bins.

Services by Airbus head Laurent Martinez said: “Thanks to this Airbus cabin retrofit, passengers on American Airlines’ A321s will be able to board faster and enjoy an overall improved travel experience.

“This is exactly the type of added-value that our services can bring to airlines.”

Services by Airbus provides integrated aviation services to the aircraft operators, lessors, and MROs.

According to Airbus’ Global Services Forecast, the commercial aircraft upgrades services market is estimated to be worth $180bn over the next 20 years.

The growth will be fueled by high competition between airlines who value the ‘passenger experience’ as a differentiator, as well as systems upgrades.

The forecast also highlighted that 14% of the projected demand will come from North America.
