Thermal Engineering - Thermal Blankets and Heatshields, Sheet Metal Fabrications and Airframe Components

Thermal Engineering is a dynamic, privately owned and globally-oriented supplier of bespoke high-temperature alloy sheet metal fabrications, airframe components, thermal blankets and heatshields to the aerospace industry.

We provide a responsive, client-focused service with in-depth knowledge of industry requirements and standards. Above all, we offer practical; comprehensive and cost-effective solutions to engine and airframe primes, OEMs and system integrators.

THERMAL INSULATION BLANKETS AND HEATSHIELDS

Thermal Engineering have significant experience in the field of aerospace heat management. We can design and manufacture both metallic and non-metallic covered thermal blankets, using a wide variety of materials from 0.05mm thick.

We constantly work to keep at the forefront of aerospace insulation, and are proud to be the UK's leading manufacturer of aerospace gas turbine thermal insulation and heat shielding products. We also produce a wide range of bespoke airframe and system thermal protection products.

Metallic materials: stainless steel, Nimonic 75, titanium CP and alloy, Inconel 600 and 625.

Non-metallic materials: glass cloth, silicone aluminised cloth, Viton cloth, aluminised cloth, ceramic fibre, quartz fibre, silicone moulded products.

FIXED AND DETACHABLE INSULATION BLANKETS

We are involved in the design and manufacture of fixed and detachable insulation blankets for:

  • Low-pressure turbine insulation segments
  • High-pressure compressor insulation strips
  • Core fairing thermal blankets
  • Exhaust duct insulation blankets
  • Fixed and detachable blankets for heat sensitive systems and electronics
  • Fire shields and heat shields
  • Air conditioning system thermal blankets
  • APU insulation blankets

HIGH-TEMPERATURE ALLOY SHEET METAL FABRICATIONS AND ASSEMBLIES

Thermal Engineering's largest and fastest growing market segment is the forming, fabrication and assembly of high-temperature alloy sheet metal structures. We have significant experience in forming hard aerospace alloys and are one of the UK's leading hot forming specialists.

Materials: Nimonic 75, C263, titanium TA10 (6-4), TA21 and CP, Hastalloy X, Inconel 600, 625 and 718, stainless steel, aluminium.

We have extensive hot, cold and stretch-forming equipment, as well as welding (fusion and resistance), laser cutting, laser drilling, heat treatment and assembly capability. Due to our experience in heat management and high temperature alloys, many of our components are found in the hot sections of aerospace and land-based gas turbines.

Typical applications include:

  • Low pressure turbine fabrications: seal panels, baffles
  • Tail bearing housing fabrications: vanes, inner and outer annuli
  • Engine externals: bleed valve silencers, ducting (over 3in diameter), case cooling ducts
  • Exhaust ducts
  • APU exhaust ducts
  • Stretch formed blocker door, thrust reverser and nacelle skins
  • Stretch formed wing leading edge skins

We can typically form and fabricate sheet metal structures to 1.5m in diameter.

AIRFRAME COMPONENTS (CNC ROUTING)

Thermal Engineering have core capabilities in producing stringers and other CNC profiled, extruded or folded sheet metal sections for business and regional jet structural airframe applications.

We can five-axis CNC or hand-route profiles, ends and holes; combined with specialist hot joggling machines which allow us to form 'steps' in the components, typically from 0.01in to 0.1in deep, which cater for aircraft skin clearance.

Materials: titanium alloys and CP, aluminium.

Typical applications are:

  • Business and regional jet fuselage components
  • Business and regional jet wing and stabiliser components
  • Business and regional jet cockpit and tail cone components

We can CNC route up to 7m in length.

CLIENTS AND PLATFORMS

Thermal Engineering count amongst their clients, Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney, ITP, Bombardier, Airbus and BAE Systems.

Military systems have included A400M, Eurofighter, Tornado and the JSF, including the TP400, EJ200 and F135.

Civil aerospace systems have included A380, Boeing 777, Bombardier CRJ family, including the complete range of all Rolls Royce Trent family engines - from Trent 700 to Trent 1000.

We also supply heatshields and thermal blankets for world rally cars, F1 teams and other racing and performance road vehicles.
