Aeromet International - High Performance Castings for the Aerospace and Defence Industry

Aeromet International PLC is a UK-based, world leader in the production of premium quality aluminium and magnesium castings by the sand and investment casting processes for aerospace, defence and medical applications.

With a sand foundry in Sittingbourne producing aluminium and magnesium castings, mould size up to 1m³, and two investment casting foundries in Rochester and Worcester, Aeromet has the capability to produce aluminium investment castings from 10mm³ to 1.5m³, by both conventional and SOPHIA processes.

Aeromet's Worcester facility, is the only Boeing approved European foundry producing castings by both conventional and the SOPHIA high property process.

Aeromet specialise in the production of avionic chassis' and housings, escape doors, fuel pumps, aero-engine heat exchangers, air intakes, aircraft canopies, structural castings, fuel connectors, and transmission castings.

Aeromet has developed, patented and trade marked its own novel version of the high property alloy A201 and designated it as A20X®, the modified alloy overcomes the metallurgical problems associated with the original alloy, segregation, cracking, and shrinkage porosity. The new alloy, now recognised as 205.0 by the Aluminium Association, is the strongest casting alloy currently developed and competes well with the mechanical properties of wrought plate in both the 2,000 and 7,000 series of aluminium alloys and with the added advantage of retaining properties at 205°C.

Among Aeromet customer approvals are: Aero Engine Controls, Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Boeing, Bombardier, EADS, Embraer, GE Aerospace, GKN Aerospace, Goodrich Corporation, Eaton Corporation, Honeywell, Latecoere, Lockheed Martin, MBDA, Meggitt, Raytheon, Rolls Royce, Ruag, SAAB, Sprit AeroSystems and Thales.

Aluminium Investment Castings

Aeromet International PLC specialise in the manufacture of a wide range of complex aerospace, defence, military and medical castings within an envelope size up to 1.5m³.

Aluminium castings are offered from a range of alloys including: 205.0(A20X®), A201, A206, A356, A357, C355, F357, L51, L92, L119 and L169.

Aluminium investment castings via the SOPHIA process

Aeromet International PLC is one of only four worldwide licensees' with the capability to produce castings by the SOPHIA high property process. The SOPHIA process achieves an increase in properties of between 10% and 20% over conventional cast alloys by computer controlled directional solidification of the molten metal. Structural and pressure tight castings are typical of parts produced by the SOPHIA process.

A20X® High Performance Material

Developed over a number of years, Aeromet has developed an innovative new material designated as A20X®. This novel material, is the strongest aluminium casting alloy currently available, with typical mechanical properties of 440Mpa UTS, 410Mpa YS and 4% elongation.

This new alloy, now recognised as 205.0 by the Aluminium Association, is the strongest casting alloy currently developed and competes well with the mechanical properties of wrought plate in both the 2,000 and 7,000 series of aluminium alloys and with the added advantage of retaining properties at 205°C.

A20X® is in the final stages of AMS and MMPDS approvals, more technical data becoming available soon.

Sand Castings

Aeromet International PLC produce complex sand castings with a mould size up to 1m x 1m x 1m and poured weights up to 150kgs for aluminium and 100kgs for magnesium and specialises in the manufacture of castings in long freezing range aluminium alloys such as C355 and L119 employed in the manufacture of heat exchangers and fuel pumps, as well as the aluminium silicon range of alloys such as A356 and A357.

Magnesium alloys RZ5/L128 are extensively used for the production of canopy parts for military aircraft and engine components.

Aluminium sand castings can be supplied in a range of alloys including 205.0. A201, A206, A356, A357, C355, L99, L51, L92 and L119 and magnesium alloys to RZ5 / L128, Electron 21 and MSRB.

Machining / Surface Treatments / Kitting

Aeromet also offers castings fully machined, surface treated / painted, assembled and kitted to meet customer requirements.

Approvals

Apart from holding approvals from many of the world's leading aerospace and defence companies, Aeromet is approved to BS EN ISO 9001:2008, AS9100, NADCAP accreditations covering chemical processing, heat treatment, NDT and welding.
