MTU Maintenance - Global Player in Commercial Engine MRO

20 June 2006 17:50

MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and an established player in the industry worldwide.

MTU designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports commercial and military aircraft and industrial gas turbines. In terms of sales, the company is the world's largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services.

In the national military arena, the company plays a singular role, being Germany's industrial lead company for practically all aircraft engines flown by the country's armed forces and serving all systems integrator functions: it provides enabling technologies, develops, manufactures and supports engines and engine components and trains customer personnel. In European engine programs, it serves as the German partner.

As a global player, MTU Aero Engines bets on worldwide presence. A primary part of its business is repairing engines and manufacturing spare parts for programs in which it is a risk and revenue sharing partner. Prospects for the engine repair sector look promising due to the current and forecast rapid growth in air passenger and cargo volumes. The company expects to win new partners globally and add new engines to its portfolio.

The company's commercial aero engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities—part of MTU's core competencies—have been pooled in the company's maintenance segment, which operates facilities in Hannover, Berlin-Brandenburg, Vancouver, Zhuhai, Kuala Lumpur and Brazil.

MTU Maintenance Hannover specializes in the repair and overhaul of medium and large-scale commercial engines. Among these are the General Electric CF6-50 and CF6-80C2, the Pratt & Whitney PW2000, the IAE (International Aero Engines) V2500 and the CFM56-7 of CFM International. Alongside technical repair offerings, including sophisticated repair techniques, the company also provides additional services like customer training, financing and 24-hour service. MTU's line of services is complemented by its Engine Pool Services, which provides airlines and industrial gas turbine operators with replacement engines. The leasing pool, to be ex-panded continuously, includes the most popular GE, Pratt & Whitney, IAE and CFMI engines.

MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg focuses on the repair and overhaul of small-size aircraft engines and of Industrial Gas Turbines (IGT). In the small engine sector, it has a joint venture with Pratt & Whitney Canada for the support of P&WC engines operated by European, African and Middle East customers. PT6A, JT15D, PW200, PW300 and PW500 series engines are being supported. A shining new star in the engine portfolio is the General Electric CF34, the best-selling engine in its class. The Ludwigsfelde-based shop is an authorized CF34TM service provider. In the industrial gas turbine field, the company has specialized in the repair of GE's LM series. The facility is MTU Aero Engines' IGT center of excellence.

MTU Maintenance Canada focuses on the repair and overhaul of CF6-50 and CFM56-3 engines. The wholly-owned MTU affiliate also provides specialized support for engine accessories.

Airfoil Services Sdn. Bhd. (ASSB) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a 50-50 joint venture of MTU Aero Engines and Lufthansa Technik AG. Formerly known as MTU Maintenance Malaysia, the shop repairs CF6-50, -80, V2500, CFM56-3 and -5 turbine blades and V2500, CF6-50 and CF6-80C2 high-pressure compressor blades. ASSB is going to expand, with a new shop to become operational next year that quadruples the old location's capacity. Newly added to its engine portfolio will be the CF34.

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, a joint venture of MTU Aero Engines and China Southern, commenced operations in early 2003. It focuses on the repair of V2500 and CFM56 engines. In addition to the CFM56-3, also the CFM56-5B and CFM56-7 have recently been added to the portfolio.

MTU Maintenance do Brasil focuses on the marketing and sale of MRO services for engine programs and industrial gas turbines in the South American region. Its focus is on the V2500 engines flown by South American airlines, such as Brazil's TAM.

MTU Aero Engines, taken across its subsidiaries, has an approximate workforce of 6,700 people. Technologically a leading player, the company excels in low-pressure turbine and high-pressure compressor technologies, engine control systems and manufacturing and repair techniques. MTU in fiscal 2005 reported 2.15 billion euros in sales.
