Turbo Power Systems - Electrical Motors, Alternators, Drives and Power ElectronicsTurbo Power Systems (TPS) specialises in high-speed electric motors and alternators, and high-performance drives and power electronics, for the aerospace, industrial and rail sectors. TPS is a well-established electrical machine and power electronics company with a growing presence in the aerospace sector. The company’s system-based approaches to design, and its ability to incorporate technology from other industries, were factors in its selection for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program. TPS is currently providing two high-performance motor drives to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Both drives are rack-mounted liquid-cooled controllers. JETTISON FUEL-PUMP MOTOR CONTROLLERSTurbo Power Systems is working with Eaton Aerospace to deliver a compact fuel-pump motor controller. The pumps are installed in the fuel tanks of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and TPS is providing the rack-mounted liquid-cooled controller for the pump’s asynchronous motor. RAM FAN MOTOR CONTROLLERSTurbo Power Systems is working with Hamilton Sundstrand to deliver a compact ram-fan motor controller for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The ram-fan motor controller is part of the Cabin Air Conditioning and Temperature Control System (CACTCS) of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The ram-fan motor controller is managed through the Hamilton Sundstrand Windsor Lock facilities in Connecticut. The CACTCS provides cabin heating and cooling for passenger, crew and cargo zones, as well as cooling for onboard power electronics equipment. TPS are providing rack-mounted motor controllers for the ram air fan motors that are used as part of the power electronics cooling system. The ram air fan motors provide liquid cooling to essential power electronics equipment on the aircraft. TPS rack-mounted motor controllers fully interface with the CACTCS' fully digital Pack Control Units (PCU). TPS rack-mounted motor controllers therefore provide the required contribution to the overall thermal management onboard the aircraft. PERMANENT MAGNET MOTORSThe need for drives in More Electric Aircraft (MEA) models has opened up the opportunity for Turbo Power Systems' Permanent Magnet (PM) motors, due to their efficiency and power density. Turbo Power Systems PM motors can be used for fans, hydraulic motors, actuators and electrically-driven loads such as the Environment Control System (ECS). MEA AC TO DC POWER CONVERTERSIn MEA applications, the power is used as direct AC or DC. The conversion to DC is typically performed by multi-pulse passive power supplies. However, as the loads increase, the more advanced AC to DC converters TPS can supply are required to maintain adequate power quality on the distribution network. ALTERNATORS FOR AUXILIARY POWER UNITSThere is a need for high-speed, high-efficiency alternators for application to Auxiliary Power Units (APUs). TPS also supplies power electronic drives to control motor loads in an aircraft, and inverters and DC / DC boost converters in order to condition the output of high-speed PM alternators.
